The Lungomare is more than Opatija’s best-known walk. It is the thread that holds this Riviera together, tracing the edge of the sea beneath terraces, gardens and old villas. You do not need to complete the whole promenade to understand its appeal.
Start with a single stretch
For a first visit, begin in Volosko and follow the waterfront towards central Opatija. Leave time for the harbour before you set off. Around Angiolina Park and the historic hotel frontage, the walk opens onto some of the town’s most recognisable scenery. Continue towards the Maiden with the Seagull sculpture, then pause rather than turning the day into a distance target.
A longer day on the coast
To explore further, continue south through Ičići and Ika towards Lovran. Treat the route as a sequence of smaller walks and choose your return transport before leaving. Lovran rewards a proper stop: its old town offers a different scale and atmosphere from Opatija’s grand seaside facades. A one-way walk with a leisurely lunch often makes a more enjoyable day than rushing to walk back.
The history beneath your feet
The promenade developed in stages as the Riviera became a fashionable resort. Its northern Volosko–Opatija section was completed in 1889; the connection south to Lovran followed in 1911. Today the Franz Joseph I promenade links these coastal communities through a shared seafront landscape. The experience is as much architectural as scenic: look up from the sea to notice stairways, balustrades and gardens.
Good to know
Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and protect yourself from the sun. Surfaces and access points vary; check your chosen section if you need step-free access. Avoid exposed stretches during rough weather.
Before you go
Do I need to walk the entire Lungomare?
No. Volosko to central Opatija is a rewarding introduction, while the southern sections work well as a separate outing.
Where does the promenade lead?
The coastal promenade links Volosko with Opatija, Ičići, Ika and Lovran. Check the official visitor information for current route conditions.
