A RIVIERA WITH A STORY

A different rhythm. An enduring elegance.

1844Villa Angiolina
1884Hotel Kvarner
1911Lungomare · Lovran

Opatija reveals itself in the details: the curve of a balcony, a garden opening towards the water, a table set beneath the trees. On the eastern shore of Istria, facing Kvarner Bay, its seaside architecture meets the wooded slopes of Učka.

Come for the grand hotels. Stay for the quieter discoveries: Volosko’s harbour, the morning light on the Lungomare, a swim between walks and the old streets of Lovran. This is a coast best experienced with time to spare.

A Riviera written along the water.

THE SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE

Follow the sea.

The Franz Joseph I promenade connects Volosko, Opatija and Lovran. Walk one beautiful stretch at a time, with gardens, sheltered coves and seafront villas along the way.

01

Day one · Arrive into the rhythm

Begin with a walk through Angiolina Park, then visit Villa Angiolina if the museum’s current opening hours fit your day. Follow the waterfront past the historic hotel frontage towards St James’s Church and the Maiden with the Seagull. Keep the afternoon free for a swim in suitable conditions, a café or your hotel’s wellness facilities. A first evening close to your accommodation makes arrival feel easy.

02

Day two · Walk towards a long lunch

Make the Lungomare the centre of the day. Choose either the northern stretch towards Volosko, with time around the harbour, or a longer southern route towards Ičići, Ika and Lovran. Decide how you will return before starting. In Lovran, step away from the waterfront to explore the old town; in Volosko, linger over a meal. Leave the evening open rather than planning another transfer.

03

Day three · A different horizon

For another coastal day, travel towards Mošćenička Draga and enjoy its shoreline and village. For a change of landscape, plan an appropriately graded route in Učka Nature Park using current weather and park information. If conditions are poor, stay local: the museum, a long lunch and a sheltered hotel or spa afternoon make a satisfying alternative. End the stay with one final seafront walk.

Small harbours, old towns and a mountain above the sea.

BEYOND OPATIJA

The Riviera is only the beginning.

From the old towns beneath Učka to the islands and port cities of Kvarner, Opatija is a natural starting point for a wider Adriatic journey.

Before you go

Where is Opatija?

Opatija is in Croatia, on the western side of Kvarner Bay and the eastern coast of the Istrian peninsula, close to Rijeka.

What is Opatija best known for?

Its historic seaside hotels and villas, landscaped parks and the Lungomare coastal promenade. Volosko and nearby Lovran add smaller harbours and old-town streets to the experience.

Can I enjoy Opatija without a car?

Yes, central Opatija and the waterfront are well suited to exploring on foot. Choose accommodation near the centre or promenade. For Učka and more distant beaches, arrange a bus, taxi or transfer and check current services.

When should I visit?

Spring and early autumn are appealing for walks and a gentler pace; summer suits a swim-focused stay. Winter offers a quieter hotel and wellness break. Weather and opening patterns vary, so confirm details before travelling.
